  1. Thousands of developers, some of the very best developers are amongst them, do not have constant internet or frequent internet disruptions, it would be wise if a local VM or local installation could be available to assist them to also use IDX.

For building apps that run on other platforms (beyond the browser), we are focused on improving the Flutter experience. This is our primary focus in this area for the foreseeable future.

For native Android and iOS development:

1.) Is the desire to use the VS Code editor that IDX is based on for native development for these platforms?

2.) Or is it the ability to run Android Studio and Xcode in the browser without requiring any local installation? Please comment with your thoughts.

Please comment with your thoughts below.

  4. Make a feature or improvement where we can preserve the IDE configurations like themes and other configurations.
Once we log out from the IDE after 1 or 2 days, the theme resets, all the default configurations are reverted, and all the extensions are removed.

  5. Think with me...
I'm a fullstack dev, that uses Flutter to client-side and Node.js to the server-side.
That's why I downloaded at my personal linux computer, the following CLIs: node, npm and flutter.
But, when I started to try to use idx, I found an obstacle!
The terminal doesn't allow me to use neither apt nor snap, to download flutter SDK to my workspace(that was created by a GitHub repo).
So, I created another workspace, selecting "Flutter" this time.
And now, I can't use node, because APT is not allowed!
    Neither sudo exists!

    (My terminal is bash)
    user@monospace-getz-1702146325587:~/myapp$ npm
    bash:…

  6. I've been teaching students using IDX these days, more or less for fun and also to test how well the IDX AI performs w.r.t React.js. A feature that I use sometimes on the local machine is Live Share extension.

A brief description of the extension -
The Live Share Extension on VSCode enables other dev to work on the same instance of VSCode on multiple files, which is extremely useful when creating small scale projects.
I understand that it is developed by a different company (Microsoft) but it will be helpful specifically for teaching purposes.
    There can be an alternative…

  7. NestJS, with its modular and scalable architecture, has become increasingly popular in the TypeScript community. Many developers, myself included, have adopted NestJS for its robust features and ease of development. Having the ability to seamlessly integrate NestJS templates into IDX projects would not only streamline the development process but also open up IDX to a larger audience of TypeScript enthusiasts.
I'd like to see enhanced compatibility with NestJS and TypeScript-based templates.

  8. Introduce the capability to browse and open local filesystem directories, as available in vscode.dev, where users can open directories and not just individual files, directly from the browser interface.

Current behavior in vscode.dev: Users can interact with the local filesystem through the browser, opening folders and files as if working locally, without uploading content to the server, which effectively bridges local and cloud development environments.

Impact: Implementing this would reduce context-switching and improve user experience by providing a seamless development workflow that integrates local and cloud-based resources.

Technical Suggestion: Adopt a File System Access API strategy to enable secure and…

  9. Need to have CICD for Apps where we can send the Apps to testers directly from IDE.

Once the User Commits the Code to repo, We should be able generate the build and share the builds via diawi/test flight/ Firebase App Sharing. If possible send the builds itself via Telegram or Whatsapp.

    Thanks,
    Nizam

  10. A service released in 2023 should not require third-party cookies to be allowed.
If not for the privacy and usability for its users, then for the project itself, since many browsers are phasing out support for third-party cookies. Firefox already blocks them and chrome will soon do the same:
    https://developer.chrome.com/en/docs/privacy-sandbox/third-party-cookie-phase-out/

  11. Add support for bitbucket.
This is fairly similar to add gitlab support:
    https://idx.uservoice.com/forums/953956-general/suggestions/46962415-add-gitlab-support

Covering both gitlab & bitbucket covers the top 3 git hosting sites.
A blocker before I try this for a personal project

  12. Currently, "Import a repo" (when creating a new workspace) only works for cloning an entire repo.

The ability to import a specific directory/path from a repo would be helpful, since many web frameworks have official examples in directories in a single repo.

    Example:
    - https://github.com/withastro/astro/tree/main/examples (Astro)
    - https://github.com/vercel/next.js/tree/canary/examples (Next.js)

Other online IDEs support this ability, such as Stackblitz, CodeSandbox.

  13. It would be great to have support for Apps Script (.gscript) files in IDX. I'm using it to customize Workspace products like Sheets and Forms.
The syntax highlighting is the same as for JavaScript, but there's a lack of autocompletion in most IDEs.

  14. Deploying an iOS app to the app store currently requires Xcode to build the IPA file and then the macOS transporter app to drop the IPA file into App Store Connect. It would be great to give developers the ability to publish an iOS app (built with Flutter or another framework) to App Store without needing to drop down to local apps on a mac machine.

  15. Intergrated terminal lacks functionality\ies of a local terminal. Can we add support for its SSH session? Maybe a documentation on how to do that would be helpful :)

  18. Development around Machine Learning and/or tools for performing ML should also be considered well, specifically around building tools for ML which do not directly involve training (such as experiment tracking, data analysis, etc.)
